My Dad was captured in Arras in France on the 23rd MAY 1940. He was sent
straight to Stalag. He worked most of the time down the mines until he
and a friend escaped. He was then sent to a saw mill were he spent the
rest of the war. He was ill most of his life with nerves. My Mother goes
to a church were a chap called Les goes. He was also in Stalag
8B. If you have any questions I could get my Mum to ask him. Last year I
gave him A load of Prisoner of War Association Magazines that I had
collected. While he was reading one, he burst into tears and got
straight on the phone. What he had read was, a lady in Canterbury had
put an add in the MAG to ask was there anybody who could tell her how
her Brother had died in France in 1940. Les knew how he had died. He got
on the phone and rang her.
He told her that they were in a village in France drinking tea and
waiting for the orders to move out. When the orders came they all put
there mugs down and started to form ranks. Her Brother decided to
collect all the cups and put them back into one of the houses, As he did
the house took a direct hit from a German shell and he was blown to
bits. She asked Les if she could come up and see him. Les said he would
be in the church on Sunday were they could meet up. On that Sunday she
turned up with all her family and they all thanked Les and said they
could now bury his memory as their was no body to bury. Les goes on a
tour of schools and tells that story to all the kids. At the end of it
He and the kids are all in tears.
